Preparation
How to prepare mind, body, and life before an ayahuasca ceremony.
How you enter a ceremony shapes what you receive. Preparation is not paperwork — it is the container the medicine works inside.
Essential questions
The questions people ask most often on this topic — with clear, sourced answers.
- How do I prepare for my first ayahuasca ceremony?
Preparation is the quiet work that decides how much the medicine can actually give you. In the two to four weeks before ceremony, follow the dieta your facilitators recommend, reduce stimulation (news, alcohol, casual sex, heavy screens), and begin a daily practice — even ten minutes of breath, journaling, or walking in nature. Clarify your intention as a question, not a demand: "Show me what I need to see." Arrive rested, hydrated, and with logistics handled so you can fully arrive.
- What intention should I set before ayahuasca?
The most useful intentions are honest questions, not desired outcomes. "Show me what I need to see" outperforms "heal my anxiety." The medicine responds to truth, not to plans.
- How long should I prepare before an ayahuasca ceremony?
Two to four weeks of intentional preparation is a good baseline for most people — enough time to shift diet, clarify intention, and slow the nervous system down. If you are on medication or carry significant trauma, allow longer and involve professional support.
