A profound, sometimes disorienting opening — mystical states, ego dissolution, felt oneness — that continues after ceremony. It can be beautiful and destabilizing at the same time, and it often needs grounded support to integrate rather than glorify.

Awakening tends to be coherent, values-affirming, and integrable with sleep, food and function. Crisis tends to erode sleep, judgment, and the ability to care for basic needs. When in doubt, involve both a spiritual mentor and a mental health professional — not one or the other.

Spiritual emergency is when a genuine opening — of energy, awareness, or identity — moves faster than the person can integrate, and starts to look like crisis from the outside. It can share symptoms with psychosis (visions, insomnia, ego dissolution) but the underlying process is coherent and often self-resolving with the right support. Ordinary psychiatric care can sometimes suppress it rather than hold it; find a practitioner familiar with transpersonal work if you or someone you love is in this territory.
